Promoting Agroecology for Sustainable Development in Cameroon
CNCD’s Commitment to Climate-Resilient Agriculture, Environmental Protection, and Community Empowerment
About the Centre for Nature Conservation and Development Cameroon (CNCD)
The Centre for Nature Conservation and Development Cameroon (CNCD) is a registered non-governmental organization working to promote environmental conservation, sustainable natural resource management, and inclusive rural development in Cameroon.
Our work focuses on empowering communities—particularly smallholder farmers, women, and youth—to adopt sustainable practices that protect ecosystems while improving livelihoods. CNCD believes that environmental protection and human development must progress together.
Agroecology is one of CNCD’s core strategic pillars.
Why Agroecology Is Critical for Cameroon’s Future
Cameroon’s agricultural sector supports the majority of the population, yet it faces growing threats from climate change, soil degradation, deforestation, and rising input costs. Conventional farming methods are increasingly unsustainable for both farmers and the environment.
Agroecology offers a proven solution by integrating ecological principles into farming systems. It enables farmers to:
- Restore and maintain soil fertility naturally
- Reduce dependency on chemical fertilizers and pesticides
- Protect biodiversity and ecosystems
- Increase resilience to climate shocks
- Improve food security and household incomes
For Cameroon, agroecology is not only an environmental strategy—it is a pathway to long-term economic and social stability.
CNCD and the Network for the Promotion of Agroecology in Cameroon (NEPAC)
CNCD is an active member of the Network for the Promotion of Agroecology in Cameroon (NEPAC), a national platform that brings together civil society organizations, farmer groups, researchers, and development actors committed to sustainable agriculture.
Through NEPAC, CNCD contributes to:
- National coordination of agroecology initiatives
- Capacity building and knowledge exchange
- Evidence-based policy advocacy
- Collective action to scale agroecological practices nationwide
This networked approach ensures impact beyond isolated projects.
Strengthening Strategy and Governance: December 2025 General Assembly in Kribi

From December 3–4, 2025, CNCD participated in the Second Ordinary General Assembly of NEPAC, held in Kribi, Cameroon.
This assembly followed the first General Assembly held in April 2025, in line with NEPAC’s charter requiring two ordinary assemblies each year. The meeting provided an important platform to:
- Review national progress in agroecology promotion
- Identify challenges faced by farming communities
- Strengthen institutional governance and accountability
- Define collective priorities for future programming
CNCD’s participation reflects its commitment to transparency, collaboration, and sustainable impact.

Cameroon’s Environmental and Socio-Economic Context
Cameroon is often described as “Africa in miniature” due to its diverse ecosystems, including rainforests, savannas, wetlands, and coastal environments. These ecosystems are essential for livelihoods, food production, and climate regulation.
However, they are under increasing pressure from:
- Unsustainable land use and deforestation
- Climate variability, droughts, and flooding
- Population growth and rural poverty
- Limited access to sustainable agricultural knowledge
Smallholder farmers—especially women and youth—are the most affected. Supporting agroecology directly addresses these interconnected challenges.
CNCD’s Integrated Approach to Agroecology
CNCD implements agroecology through a multi-level strategy:
Community-Level Action
- Farmer training and field demonstrations
- Establishment of agroecology learning sites
- Farmer-to-farmer knowledge exchange
Institutional Strengthening
- Support to local organizations and cooperatives
- Data collection and impact monitoring
Policy Engagement
- National advocacy through NEPAC
- Contribution of grassroots evidence to policy discussions
This integrated model ensures sustainability, scalability, and accountability.
Why Donor and Foundation Support Is Essential
Despite its high impact, agroecology remains underfunded in Cameroon. CNCD faces funding gaps that limit its ability to:
- Expand farmer training programs
- Reach remote and underserved communities
- Scale proven pilot projects
- Strengthen monitoring, evaluation, and learning systems
Support from international donors, foundations, and development partners is critical to sustaining and expanding this work.
